Chapter 710: Corpse Ghost

The call ended even though Gao Ming still had more things to say. “I bet he must be so mad.” Gao Ming told Wu Wei to go ahead, and he sent Black Crow a message, “The fish has taken the bait.”

The setting sun was like a rotten orange. It disappeared down the horizon with its sticky glow. The night appeared to be darker than before. Even the temperature was lower.

“Has it become colder?” Wu Wei tightened her collar. She held the camera and scanned the buildings in the dark. Zhu Chuan Medicine’s old site was huge. It included the factory, the lab and two residential hostels.

“This way.” Gao Ming found a patrolling night police officer at the end of the alley. The man was tall and pale. Black capillaries pulsed around his neck. He had a thin scar on his lips. The night police should wear a black raincoat after it was dark, but this officer didn’t like to cover his body.

“Ding Xiang introduced us to come here. We want to shoot some footage.” Gao Ming didn’t waste time and handed the man the bribe. “We only have enough for one person. When the shoot is done, I’ll give you more.” Gao Ming prepared the note. He didn’t care about his debt anymore. However, the officer didn’t accept that. He pointed at Wu Wei. “She will stay here. You’ll come with me with the camera. Before I get off my shift, I’ll send you in.” Even though the night police were corrupt, they took their work seriously.

The iron door rattled. Gao Ming carried the camera with difficulty. He signalled to Wu Wei to hide. He followed the officer into a small path.

“Zhu Chuan Medicine is huge. Many areas are safe. The only taboo zones are Hostel A’s Fourth Floor. A lot of the new lab base’s workers used to stay there.” The officer’s voice came from under the raincoat.

“The taboo zone is the hostel?! I thought it would be the lab.” Gao Ming realised the information on the internet was inaccurate.

“Some employees sneaked the new medicine out of the lab and brought it home. That night, everyone on that floor died. None of the corpses is complete. Some are missing an arm, and others are missing a spine. We tried to determine the killer, but the number of corpses matches the employee list. It looks like the killer died as well.” The officer explained, “The killing method was brusque and straightforward, but they were all different. It felt like everyone collectively lost their sanity and decided to murder one another in ecstasy.”

The night sounded harrowing.“By the way, we still haven’t found the missing organs and limbs. Someone has been collecting them to form a new lifeform. It is hiding in Hostel A.”

The officer moved slowly. The two buildings stood in the dark. They walked against the wind. Gao Ming followed the man for a while, but they were no closer to the hostels.

“Have we gone the wrong way?” Gao Ming’s arm, which carried the camera, felt sore. He leaned ‘weakly’ on the wall.

“You’re not the first who wants to enter the place to shoot something. None of them survived.” The officer suddenly stopped. “But you still can’t die.”

Gao Ming sensed that something was wrong. He used the camera as a weapon.

“You are brave to shoot in the taboo zone… and trick the night police.”

An electric baton appeared. The sparks danced in the dark. The officer’s tone became heightened with glee. He was excited when he thought about how to torture Gao Ming. “The old dog is the oldest night police officer. Have you wondered why he can live for so long? Even I don’t dare to go against him. Why do you have to lie to him?”

“Do you work for him?” Gao Ming’s lips turned white.

“Me? Many people at the station want him to die, including me, but he has something over me.” The officer held the baton and raised his head. His eyes filled with blood. “Many people who came here didn’t die in the taboo zones. They died after I had my fun with them. I sent their corpses into the hostels. It’s strange. All the corpses disappeared the next day. I didn’t even have to deal with them.” The scar on the lips twisted from happiness. The officer consoled Gao Ming. “Don’t be scared. I’m not going to kill you. After I’m done torturing you, I’ll inject you with drugs to turn you into a monster. You’ll be alive when I hand you over to the old dog.”

“Since we both hate him, why don’t we work together? Isn’t that the best solution?” Gao Ming’s body shook from fear. His legs wobbled, and he fell into the mud.

“When you have lunch, will you work together with the fried chicken on your plate? Are you that innocent? Or that stupid?” The officer waved the baton. Lightning arced through the night.

Covering his nose and mouth, the old man held the lid of his cap with his finger. His murky eyes were sharp with murderous intention. “Corpse Ghost, where is the man?”

The tattered curtain opened. The officer toyed with the baton as he stood by the entrance. “In the house.”

“Bring him out.” The old man was cautious. He didn’t enter the house.

“I don’t think I can.” The officer knocked on an iron cage. A monster that was dominated by hatred grabbed the rails and howled. His hands were cut by the jagged edges, but the blood triggered him even more.

“Yes. It’s the man from this morning.” The old man checked the monster’s face. However, he still refused to enter the room. “He said he had something that Black Crow left behind. Then, the two of them visited the poor people's district. I suspect they are planning something… However, now that you’ve turned him into a monster, I cannot continue my investigation anymore.”

“Is that a complaint?” The officer glared at the old man. “Bring the man with you. Give me the stuff.”

“You’ve been punished to guard this place for a white already. Have you considered coming back to the station?” The old man took out two clear vials from under his coat. They contained white sticky blots. “Join my team, and I can pretend I don’t know what you’ve done in the taboo zones. Every week, you’ll be rewarded with double the medicine on top of that.”

Staring at the vials, Corpse Ghost licked his lips. When his tongue touched the scar on his lip, he slowly returned to normal. “I’m curious. We all work for the night police. How do you always get the supply of the latest medicine?”
